Animal Crossing New Horizons: How to Remove Villagers

Making new friends and having them come live on the island is arguably one of the best parts of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. However, sometimes a villager can overstay their welcome, or perhaps a new villager has caught the eye of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons' player. Either way, sometimes push comes to shove and it's time to remove a villager.

Despite a lot of rumors and potential solutions floating around online, there are two tried and true methods to remove a villager. Both involve a little time, and one requires having made some progress in the island development department. But for those determined, either will work to remove a villager that has overstayed their welcome.

Neglect

The "easier" of the two methods and one that doesn't require a lot of progress in Animal Crossing New Horizons is to simply neglect the villager. Just like in real life, ignoring the person, not taking on requests or tasks from them, and socializing with others will get the message across. After exacting extreme social distancing for several days, the villager should begin to act differently. Players will want to look for the villager wandering around with a thought bubble over their heads or running up to the player shouting their name. At this point, it is safe to engage with the villager as they are now considering moving. Note that this can also occur with villagers a player wants to stay, so there is still an option during this dialogue to convince them to stay or go.

The Campsite

This method requires a bit more time invested in Animal Crossing New Horizons. Players will need to have a full roster of 10 villagers on their island. As such, this method isn't recommended for players still progressing their island or extensively working with the tanooki-in-charge, Tom Nook. Once players have unlocked the campsite, they can use an Amiibo Card to request the villager come to the island for a visit. While one could wait for a villager to appear on their own at the campsite, this method will guarantee an appearance.

Once summoned, the visitor will task the player with a DIY project. Completing these tasks over the course of several days will build up a rapport with the villager. On the third day of crafting the DIY projects, the villager will talk about moving in. However, with a full village, it will require another resident to move out. From there, the player can select a villager to "negotiate" with. The visiting villager will then speak with the tenant facing eviction and begin the process.
